A CCOMMODATION for 63 pasrisengers, 42 seated and 21 standing, is provided in each of 39 new A.E.C. single-deckers to be supplied to the Christchurch Tramway Board. New Zealand. Crossley Motors, Ltd., is supplying the bodies, and the chassis are of the Regal Mark IV type with underfloor engines. Two similar buses are being made for operation in New Plymouth.

Built for pay-as-you-enter operation, each vehicle has a jack-knife front door and an exit before the rear axle. _The electro-pneurnatically , operated Glider-type doors-are interlocked with the controls so that it is impossible to move off until they are shut. Emergency valves are provided -inside and outside and the doors tan also be worked manually.

Steel Pillars Integrally constructed, the bodies have structural members of steel, the Crossley standard pillar being modified so that both interior and exterior panels can be pop-riveted. Timber has been reduced to a great extent, but the flooring is of resin-bonded plywood, well insulated from engine noise. Overall measurements are: Length, 33 ft.; width, 8 ft.; and height,

A special study has been made of ventilation, the scheme including extractors in the roof and intakes of Crossley design at the front of the vehicle. Two extractors are fitted in the recess above the screens and two in the front pPnel, all being of the hinged type ano ,ndividually controlled by winding handles, Insulation between the double-skinned roof helps to provide against the effects of sudden changes of temperature. Screens are set at an angle of 21 degrees, so giving freedom from glare. A mirror placed at the rear door reflects a view of the ".exit into another mirror in front of the driver....

The two vehicles for New Plymouth and the first six for Christchurchere being wired for amplifying equipment which will be fitted on arrival in New Zealand. Destination names and route numbers are combined on the indicator blinds, there being a black background for the former and green for the latter. Fronts and rear wings are in moulded rubber and are all interchangeable. Four pairs of hooks are fixed beneath the windscreen for the carriage of perambulators.
