CM COVER STORY Bv Brian Weatht,

A MINOR FACELIFT, a major interior makeover, a two-pedal Opticruise automated gearbox and a real-time driver performance monitoring system are just some of the revisions that have been made to Scania's R-Series range, revealed last week by the Swedish truck-maker.

While externally the R cab looks little changed from its predecessor, there is a new grille and bumper with reshaped air-intakes, which allow greater airflow through the engine compartment in preparation for the next generation of Euro-6 engines.

The changes also allow the easier fitment of a radar detector for smart cruise control systems.

Other chassis tweaks include more effective side skirts, and the repositioning of the batteries to the rear of the frame, providing easier packaging of fuel tanks with a maximum of 1,500 litres now possible on 4x2 tractors — even when fitted with an Ad Blue tank. The most significant drivetrain improvement is the long-awaited arrival of a two-pedal version of Scania's Opticruise automated gearshift system, which uses an electro-hydraulic control unit to operate the clutch. Two-pedal Opticruise is available on eight-, 12and 14-speed gearboxes, and is standard on all Long-Haul chassis.

• A full report on the revamped R-Series, including driving impressions, will appear in C'M I October. Log on to www.roadtransport.com to see a video of the slide-out bunk in action.
