Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• I read with amusement the letter from your driver who does work for Tarmac and ARC. I can only conclude that the man must be an idiot. In this area, owner-drivers are beating a path to the premises of ARC and Tarmac to do work for both companies and I don't see any reps from either company twisting anyone's arms.

Indeed, some owner-drivers are prepared to give up their independence and tie themselves to the above-named companies for a number of years. These are what I would term the glad and sorry men; glad that they have a big wagon, sorry that they have to pay for it. So there must be a carrot dangling somewhere. As for me, I'm still looking for it.

It is with tongue in cheek I suggest that your correspondent puts his name to any future letters. Who knows, the many successful owner-drivers may have a whip round for him—or at least advise him of the nearest mini-cab office. E MacPharlane Harlington, Middlesex.
