TAIRED 'operators under the Govern
ment Haulage Scheme in the North-; Western Area held a meeting at Manchester last week and constituted thems,elves a provisional committee. This development is in accordance with the undertaking of the S.J.C. to set up national and_ regional panels to deal with matters' affecting operators whose vehicles are hired to the Ministry of War Transport. The meeting was also attended by the secretaries of a number of ttansport associations in the area and they will serve on the committee,
Mr. T. Lawrenscn (Liverpool) was elected chairman pro term; Mr. W. J. Allen *(Manchester) was provisionally appointed as area representative on the National Hired Operators Panel; Mr. B, Winterbottom (Manchester') was appointed secretary.
Although the provisional committee was considered to be fairly representa. tive of hired operators in the 'area, the meeting agreed that when the Minister had dealt with all the offers of longdistance vehicles made to him it would • he necessary. to review the.eomposition of the Committee and, if necessary,. strengthen_ the representation from the various districts.
In order to create a link between itte . Committee and hired operators through-out the area, it was re'solved that the secretaries of the various associations (national and local) in the 10 districts should serve on the committee. Thus, hired Operators will be able to uSe the nohnal channel to bring matters befOre the committee.
General qu.estions discussed 'included wear and replacement of tyres. time allowable for repairs to vehicles, allowable telephone charges, wages of second men, and other aspects of • remuneration as laid down for hired vehicles.
