Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Nottingham Corporation has decided to avail itself to the full of the aid offeyed by the Ministry of Transport. for effecting much-needed road improvements to various parts of the city. It had been officially notified that the assistance from the Road Fund would not, in any case, exceed 50 per cent, of the estimated cost of schemes which the Munster might approve, and the municipal authorities have determined to carry cot some operations which it is estimated

B30 will entail an expenditure of 2154,930.

The Ministry of Transport is to be. asked for a grant of 50 per cent. in respect of a sum of £114,630; it having been intimated that the Government proposed to confine assistanee to works carried out from capital, and to continue grants of 50 per cent, for revenueproducing schemes and of 65 per cent. for nonareverme-produeing projects.

Whilst the possibility thus afforded of effecting considerable road improvements

is appreciated in Nottingham, the re'gret is that the work has necessarily to be restricted for the greater part to outlying districts of the city, many central thoroughfares which are quite inadequate to meet the requirements of modern-day traffic having still to be allowed to remain in an undesirably congested state, owing to the almost prohibitive cost which would be involved irt the demolition of large business premises.
