Materials Handling

A CONFERENCE on materials

handling, arranged specially for those in the higher levels of management, will be held on June 12-13 at the College of Aeronautics, Cranfield, Beds. Among the papers to be presented is " Automation in Handling—the Warehouse of the Future ".

Registration forms for the conference, for which the fee is 15 gns., may be obtained from The Secretary, Institute of Materials Handling, 32 Watling Street, London, E.C.4.

Pedestrian-controlled Vehicles A LTHOUGH, as reported last week. PA regulations now before Parliament will, if approved, remove pedestrian

controlled mechanically propelled vehicles up to 8 cwt. unladen from the category of "motor vehicles", these will still have to be licensed and registered as hitherto.

The principal effect of "Pedestrian Controlled Vehicles Regulations 1963" will be that drivers of these vehicles will no longer require a driving licence.

FrenchTrying Hydrostatic Gearboxes

TRIALS of hydrostatic gearboxes for 1 heavy goods vehicles are being carried out by Maffei, the French tipping body makers and hydraulic engineers. The design incorporates a variable output pump feeding one or more hydraulic motors. The technique employed provides good overrun braking.

M. Jean d'Assignics, president of Martel, says he expects the unit to be competitive with conventional types in the near future.
