All the class winners from the centres compete for the National class winners championship. There are eight competition classes ranging from small vans to maximum size artics.

The competition consists of an observed road route, a Highway Code, legal responsibilities and technical knowledge paper and a series of three manoeuvring tests.

A completely different series of tests is run at the Finals.

To select the Lorry Driver of the Year the eight national class winners compete in a further series of manoeuvring tests, and a fault-finding test. They drive four different types of vehicles supplied by one of the major vehicle manufacturers. This year they are being supplied by the Vauxhall Motor Co Ltd. Michelin will once again, later in the year, be taking the LDoY on a European Study Tour.

At the Finals vehicle manufacturers and suppliers to the industry will display their products and organise special competitions and entertainment for the competitors, their families and friends, and the public.
