Margaret Brown, who works for Greater Glasgow PTE, told her colleagues that she could remember the days when some of the city's trams had solid fuel stoves — but her friends at Maryhill didn't believe her. Now Interchange, the PTE's newsheet, has settled the argument by calling in tram expert Brian Longworth.
And Margaret is right — works cars did carry them; although passenger services didn't.
The stoves were mostly in the tool cars of the permanent way and mains department operating at night. The stoves were used to boil kettles for tea and presumably to heat buckets of pitch.
