THE chairman of the Northern
Traffic Commissioners, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, sitting at Newcastle upon Tyne on Tuesday criticized local newspaper reports that they had been responsible for ordering two special works services to cease operating at short notice last week from a factory at North Shields. This was during the hearing of unsuccessful applications by W. B. Kerr and Co. (Luxury Coaches), Ltd., and R. Armstrong (Bus Proprietors), Ltd., for short-term licences to carry women employees from Newcastle and North Shields to Dukes and Markus, of North Shields, clothing factory.
For the applicants, Mr. Brian Cato said that in each case the applicants had been running contract coaches, morning and evening, and in each case they were paid monthly by cheque by the company. During the last fortnight their attention had been drawn, by a Ministry of Transport examiner, to the effect that information had come to light that fares were being paid by individual workers usine the buses. Both operators had taken legal advice which had resulted in thshort-term applications.
