Mr. D. G. MaeLaren, who has been appointed service engineer to the Gilford Motor Co., Ltd., has had considerable experience in the production and maintenance of commercial-motor vehicles, having previously held positions with the Daimler Co., Ltd., the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., and certain other manufacturers. The business of Messrs. Bouts Brothers was converted into a private company in Noverabef last, with an authorized capital of £30,000, which has recently been increased to £83,000. Mr. Tillotson is chairman and managing director, and Mr. Rhodes a director

" of Oswald Tillotson (1929), Ltd., of Burnley,"-which acts as the wholesale distributor for A.E.C. products over a wide area in the north.

Road Fund Income.

For the year ended March 31st, 1930, the income of the Road Fund was £22,082,098, of which £21,881,532 was received from duties on motor vehicles. The principal, grants made were as follow :—Maintenance of Class 1 and Class 2 roads an&bridges, £10,041,132; maintenance Of unclassified roads, £1,810,970, unemployment relief programmes, 12,624,978; other purposes, £3,859,551. The receipts exceeded those of the preceding year by 1869,151, whilst .expeaditure was higher by 12,866,561.

" Devon General's" Progress.

. The report of the Devon General Omnibus and Touring Co., Ltd., for the year ended December 31st last shows a , profit, after writing off depreciation, of

• 5.34,815, as compared with £31,923 in the previous year. After setting,saside 16,000 for income tax, and meeting certain other items, there remains a balance of £27,686, this amount being increased to 130,764 after adding the carry forward from the previous year.

The general reserve receives an allotment of 110,000, whilst a dividend on the preference shares for the year accounts for £7,000. After deducting £8,400 in respect of a dividend of 12 per cent, on the ordinary shares and taking into account the £1,700 'written off goodwill and an expenditure of £459 in connection with the increase of capital, there remains a balance of £3,206 to be carried forward.

Atithe end of the year the company owned, directly or indirectly, a fleet of 173 buses -and coaches-. In the report mention is made of the fact that the

scheme of co-ordinated rail-and-road services, arranged with the Great Western and Southern Railways, is working smoothly.

London Experiments with All-weather Double-saloon Buses. Considerable experimental work has been carried out in the past by the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., in the hope of producing. a type of allweather head, for double-saloon buses, which would be light, inexpensive, efficient and speedy of operation, and learn that the problem is now being approached on lines Which, it is hoped, will prove more successful than has been the case with-previous attempts.

A New Trojan Van.

• Trojan, Ltd., Purley Way, Croydon, is now producing its Victory model 10-ewt van, which it claims has the largest loading capacity in the 15-ewt. taxation class. It can be obtained on solid or pneumatic tyres at £160, when equipped with a two-speed epicyclic gearbox, or at £165 with a three-speed gearbox, also of the epicyclie;foolproof type.

Important features are the body capacity of 106 cubic ft. and an enclosed cab with winding windows, whilst the rear axle incorporates a differential—a novel item for a Trojan. The springing has bten specially strengthened, and 29-in. by 5-in. tyres are now standardized, when pneumatics are required. The design of the body has been revised to cope effectively with the larger loads which can now ho carried.

Revised priees of the existing models are :-7-cwt. van, 1135; chassis, £115; standard 10-cwt. van, 1150; chassis, £125. Pneumatic or solid tyres may be specified as desired.

A Map of the Traffic Areas.

Edward . Stanford, Ltd., the wellknown map company, of 12-14, Long Acre, London, W.C.2, -has produced an excellent map of England, Scotland and Wales showing in different colours the traffic areas under the Road Traffic Act, 1930. The map measures 2 ft. 6 ins. by 1 ft. 10 ins., and is sold at 3s. 6d. (on cloth-lined paper, flat), 4s. lid.. (folded, in cover) and 6s. 6d. (on cloth and rollers). Such a map is indispensable for local authorities and all concerns operating passenger-transport seavices. This company, incidentally, prepares maps by. the Lutra process, which permits them to be written on, and the writing may be cleaned off without damaging the maps.
