Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FOR a light roller which can be 12 controlled by one man walking behind and directing it by means of a loop-type steerage bar, there is much to recommend the principle of mounting the engine Land transmission set within the roll. There are two or three makes of this type on the market which we have described in these pages ; to their number must be added the machinest, made by Mr. Fred Senior, Ryecroft Works, Redcar Lane, Recker.

Patents were taken out in

respect of these machines in 1910, so it will be realized that they embody longstanding experience. They are made in various sizes, one of the largest being 4 ft. 6 ins, in diameter, the roll being split and of 4 ft. width.

A useful 1-ton machine has a 3-ft. roll, 2 ft. 6 ins, wide; it is driven by a Villiers 14 h.p. two-stroke-cycle engine and the power is taken by chain to a gearbox giving one forward and one revarse speed ; a neutral is, of course, provided. Final drive is by chain to a gearwheel meshing with an internally toothed ring. The roll is of the twopiece, type and the machine can be handled by a lad of 16 years. The price is £100.

A heavier model, equipped with a Villiers 34 h.p. engine, is designed to climb much steeper grades; this feature is useful in garden work or on sloping lawns
