THE FIRST right-hand-drive Daf FAX 85.430 8x2 has arrived at Thame prior to heading off to the bodybuilder. In place of the second driven axle is an air-suspended lifting and steering axle that saves around 700kg compared with an 8x4. Operator Richard Cranes ordered the 7.7m-wheelbase chassis and Space Cab as a prime mover for a drawbar combination which will be used for machinery transport. Truck and trailer will
both be fitted with alloy flatbed bodies; a Pesci SPE560-3 crane will be fitted at the rear of the truck chassis.
Plated at 44 tonnes GCW, the FAX has a 429hp engine,16-speed ZF speed gearbox, single-reduction axle. It weighs in at 9,790kg (without driver or fuel).
The pneumatically operated steered rear axle increases manoeuvrability, reducing tyre scrub and looks straight ahead if lifted or when the engine stops.
