OVERLOADING by British vehicles in East Sussex has fallen by a half in the last three years, but foreign vehicles continue to commit the offence at a very high level.
County consumer protection officer Paul Allen, told the County Public Protection Committee that in 1974 almost 40 per cent of British vehicles checked were overloaded.
This figure had dropped to less than 20 per cent.
"Initial results show, however, that about 40 per cent of the Continentals checked were overloaded,' continued Mr Allen.
"This figure relates to a small volume of vehicles checked, and almost invariably such vehicles are found to comply with the manufacturers weight-safety specifications and the weight law in their country of origin.
"Nevertheless, such a degree of non-compliance among overseas vehicles is a cause of concern, and it is hoped that foreign vehicles will follow the trend adopted by their British counterparts."
