TUBELESS tyres have found a new use. Five Firestone 1 tyres, each more than 9 ft. in diameter and weighing 25 cwt., mounted on wheels on an axle, make an effective fender to hang over the side of an oil tanker when two ocean-going craf t transfer their cargoes at sea. " Bus-back "

ONG-SUFFERING hauliers in the United States, *having heard mire than enough of "piggy-back," " fishyback " and " birdy-back," might well have been spared the latest hideously-named form of goods movement—" bus-back," Names apart, however, they agree that at least it keeps the traffic moving by road.

" Bus-back " is the name given to a, new service, by the Railway Express Agency, whereby shipments are loaded in li-ton trailers hitched to inter-city buses. It is the latest development in the rapid growth of container traffic.

The railway " piggy-back " service is, of course, well known and self-explanatory—but the other term, "fishy-back," has been coined by some shipping lines who now carry containers, while airlines load containers for " birdy-back " service.

n26 The first of the "bus-back " services has been inaugurated by the Transcontinental Bus System, Dallas, on the 136-mile run between Joplin, Missouri, and Harrison, Arkansas. understand that the service will be introduced on other routes.

Folly

IF delivery drivers, such as milk and I bakers' roundsmen, realized the risks they ran in allowing children to help them, they might be less willing to accept unpaid aid. If the child is under 13 the vanman is breaking the law by "employing " him, even without pay, and if, as sometimes happens, he allows his young assistant to drive the vehicle, he is inviting a penalty that will put him out of work. But, apart from the legal consequences, it is height of folly to encourage children to run across the road to deliver goods.

In this context it is appropriate to remark upon the exposure to danger of small children to stop-start delivery vehicles. This has tragically persisted for many years, but the modern type of forward-control light van, which affords the driver good visibility, might have brought some improvement. Even so, the fitting of glazed panels below the windscreen on the front quarters might he tried.

...cure for Smoking N an unguarded moment I confessed admiration for those who have the strength of mind to give up smoking. "It's easy," said the man. " You just have to give yourself n incentive. Take my case. Yesterday I came up to London y train from Plymouth. When I got into the train I said to tyself, 'If I don't smoke until I get to Paddington, I'll give tyseif anything I want.' So I didn't smoke."

"Did you give yourself want you wanted?" I asked. "Yes," he said.

"What was it?" I inquired.

"A good cigar," he said.
