• The future of tolls on the Skye Bridge has been thrown into disarray following a ruling by a Scottish court in favour of two non-toll payers.
The ruling, by the sheriff of Dingwall Sheriff Court, James Fraser, is being interpreted by Skye and Kyle Against Tolls (SKAT) as leading to the end of tolls on the bridge. Fraser ruled that the legislation covering the tolls is defective because it fails to specify if a vehicle's owner, driver or passenger should pay the tolls. "It should say what it means and mean what it says," Fraser decided.
If an appeal against the ruling by the Procurator Fiscal fails the toll legislation will have to be amended.
