AN application to enable eight lorries belonging to Eastsacks (Transit) Ltd., of Gorleston, to carry fertilizer from the West Country to Norfolk and Suffolk was turned down at Norwich on Monday Eight local hauliers objected.

Eastsacks wanted to carry the fertilizer for J. and H. Bunn Ltd., but the Eastern deputy Licensing Authority. Mr. John Gazdar, said he was satisfied that Bunn's requirements could be met by local hauliers. "Fhe application was for a B licence for goods for the associated companies of Eastsacks and Supersacks (Norfolk) Ltd. and for Bunn to return loads from the Severnside works of I.C.I.

Mr. A. W. Eades, for the applicant, said the two associated companies manufactured more than Int sacks and bags weekly, and Eastsacks had been developed to handle transportation because, he claimed, local hauliers had not been able to provide the necessary service. Eastsacks had no carrier's licence and their lorries were regularly returning empty from the Avonmouth and Bristol area. The present application would allow them to bring back the fertilizer for Bunn. "There is no intention of taking work from the local hauliers. This is looked upon as a special matter ", said Mr. Eades.

Mr. C. R. Kaile, for the objectors, called two hauliers who said they could handle the traffic.

The deputy L.A. said it would be "a reflection on the hauliers in this area" if between them they were unable to handle the amounts of fertilizer involved —an estimated 500 tons in a nine-month period. He was satisfied that, given notice, the two hauliers who had given evidence and the other two objectors could deal with the transportation if there was co-operation between them and Bunn.
