THAT conncils stlould refrain from passing resolutions on councillors' unsupported statements was an opinion expressed at Salisbury by Mr. A. F. Nicholson, chairman of the Western Traffic Commissioners. Objections to licence renewals by Wilts and Dorset Motor Services. Ltd., by Salisbury City Council were entered, but, on representations of the Commissioners, the council decided to confer with Mr. R. I. H. Longman, secretary of the company, on the question of alleged excessive fares.
Mr. Longman urged that corpora tions should consult operating companies, rather than listen to unsupported and inaccurate statements of their members. Especially should they refrain from passing unjustifiable resolutions founded on false premises. As a 'consequence of this council resolution, the company had been put to considerable inconvenience, other districts approaching it with demands for reductions in fares and with charging them with 50-per-cent. increases.
In granting renewals, the chairman remarked that the Commissioners were agreed that the better course would have been for the council to have approached the ,company before making charges in public. Then these inaccurate statements would never have been made.
