Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A. T. Speedometer Co., Ltd., Long Acre, London, W.C.

112] A ALAGNETIC SPEEDOMETER. [112 We have already described the construction of the A.T. speedometer quite recently in THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR. Types of these instruments specially calibrated for commercial-vehicle use to 25 m.p.h. or more form an important exhibit on this stand. One speedometer will be shown at .work, attached to a stand on which it is subjected to constant and heavy vibration. The finger remains perfectly constant at given speeds.

T. C. Aveling and Co. (Birmingham), Ltd., New Canal Street, Birmingham.

134] A PRACTICABLE WEATHER SCREEN. [134

The Aveling weather screen is adjustable, and has the advantage of closing instantaneously when required. It affords ample protection against wind, rain and sun, and allows the driver a clear view of the road. There is no glass in the construction of the screen, so that vibration does not affect it. Examples of this screen can be found on vehicles exhibited by Thornycroft and Daimler. It protects the driver's hands and knees in the best. way, and it should be used more generally.

Brampton Bros., Ltd., Oliver Street Works, Birmingham.

115] CHAINS FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. [115 The most interesting feature on this stand to many people is, we imagine,. the chain drive which incorporates a shock-absorbing spring sprocket. This can be applied for service on heavy steamor petroldriven vehicles if desired. A centrally-situated stand

serves to demonstrate specimens of l3ramptoh r and silent chains, the sides of the stand being occupied by specimen camshaft drives of the silent-chain type. The side-plates used on these chains are well worth some little notice from the intending use.r. It is not without interest to note that special Brampton spring chains are employed throughout the Pedrail.

David Brown and Son (Huddersfield), Ltd., Huddersfield.

1481 WORM-DRIVEN BACK AXLES. [148

" D.B.S. worm gearing constitutes a smooth, silky. drive," so says this manufacturer. If high quality of finish and sound constructional features of the various exhibits on this stand were offered as evidence, then this observation is certainly justified. There are many examples of worm-gear sets constructed to work under various loads and speeds on view. The particular form of tooth, together with the extremely smooth surface made possible owing to the special alloy used in their manufacture, should allow of a most efficient drive for commercial vehicles. We were favourably impressed by two examples of completed rear axles, designed and constructed by this concern ; the smaller is suited for a 15-cwt. delivery van and the larger for a five-ton machine.
