Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The McCurd chaesis will well repay a. close inspection, for very obviously it is the result of a careful study of heavy •chassis requirements and of a knowledge of the shortcomings of many ether types. Thus one finds exceptional precautions against misalignment : the clutch shaft is universally joiuted at both ends and so is the cardart shaft and gear cross-shaft, while both engine and gearbox are threepoint suspended. Then other practical details are: the torque rod link which serves as a safety strap for the cardan shaft ; the side brake acts on the gearshaft so as to be unaffected by the loading ; the use or ample size oil reservoirs instead of greasers ; the ease with which the clutch may be dismantled and the adjustable clutch stop. The engine is rated at 40 h.p., developing a trifle over Ibis at 1100 revs. per min. The bore and stroke are 111 mm. by 110 mm. respectively, the cylinders being in pairs with the valves on opposite sides and unenelosed, bat to reduce valve noise spring tappets are used.

Cooling is by thermo syphon and a spring-mounted radiator provided with a fan with friction drive. The lubrication is by pump to separate troughs, the level of the oil being easily adjustable, while a feature which has been found to make for economy is the provision of tubular air-ways through the sump, which give much more efficient air-cooling than ribs. The clutch is fabric-lined and of particularly large diameter. The pedal-shaft is short, to be frea from springing, and the pedals are adjustable. The gearbox has an ample-sized inspection cover, while the locking mechanism is separate tram the box. The gate is interesting, being recessed so that the gate is underneath and the rocking centre above, this disposition giving freedom from binding. The rear axle is worm-driven, the casing being of the horizontal-ring

type. Another little bit of genii detail is the provision of small holes in all flanges to facilitate the breaking of joints without prising with a screwdriver. There are two sets of side brakes of the fabriclined and expanding type acting on concentric drums. One is foot, and the other hand operated, and, like the eountershaft brake, both are finger adjusted. In addition to the, triangular torque membee, there, are side radius rods centred in line with the forward universal, There is a sprag on the gearshaft brake drums, while the steering segment is eccentrically adjusted. Altogether this chassis is a notable addition to the first-class 2i-ten types, and those interested in is interior details will find the engiee and axle shown dismantled en at lea c tic a.
