Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Hanford subvention model is, unfortunately, not being shown at Olympia, and the only chassis staged is one of this maker's 30 h.p. four-ton chain-driven models. The excellence of design of the Hanford engines is sufficiently well known to warrant our leaving it to speak for itself ; from time to time we have had occasion to comment upon the efficient performances and satisfactory work given by this make of machine in the hands of a very widely-differing class of user. The company's exhibit at Olympia is a most comprehensive one, and it is found to include a smartlyfinished 30 'hp, fire-tender, with extension ladder, gas bottle, hose reel, hose boxes, and other neces r8

sary appliances for rendering firstaid in case of fire. Another of the exhibits is a very luxurious 30 h.p. torpedo char-k-banes, finished in a delicate shade of French grey. We understand that the latter machine is sold, but we are asked at the present time to withhold the name of the purchaser.

There are, however, three other vehicles on the stand which bear

the owners' names, and in two cases these names are of world-wide fame. One of the vehicles to which we refer is a smart 25 h.p. two-ton van for Robertsons, the marmalade people of Catforui, -whilst the other

is a 30 h.p. four-ton brewer's wagon for Watney, Combe, Reid and Co., Ltd. This last-named machine is finished in Watney's usual style, and is a fine example of Hanford production. A 30 hp. five.ton tipping wagon, built to the order of the Highways Department of the Sheffield Corporation, is the other vehicle exhibit on the Hallford stand. This is a low-sided tipping body finished in blue and white, the tipping gear being of the screw-andnut type, operated through a spur reduction gear, the shafts for the pinion and gearwheel being extended right across the frame, and by transferring the tipping handles from the one shaft to the other, a low speed, with consequent high purchase, is obtained for tipping the wagon, and a high speed for pulling the body back again into its normal horizontal position. An engine similar to that fitted to this maker's subvention type of vehicle is also staged, and an examination of this will show that its cylinders, whilst being cast in pairs, and with the valves arranged on both sides, have the valve stems completely enclosed, and the crankcase is provided with four large inspection doors ; it is governed, has an enclosed magneto, and generally is arranged to give a ready access to all the parts for adjustment or renewals.
