-IT has been announced by the Minister of Transport. that the Government has arranged for the production of steel helmets of new design on a scale to provide for all men and women workers. These will be sold at the price of 5s. 6d. each to employers for the use of their employees, and will afford a standard of protection as good as that of the mild-steel helmets at present available for purchase• by road-transport undertakings.
The Minister trusts that all such undertakings whose employees are not already equipped with helmets will take steps to provide these.
The present arrangements under which Grade II mild-steel helmets of the Service type are being made available for drivers, conductors and attendants on goods vehicles (including C-category vehicles), inspectors, points
men and other outside staff, will be continued for the remainder of this month, but applications will not be accepted after January 31.
Where such helmets have already been allocated on the " one-shift " basis and it is wished to include the remainder of the staff of the employees covereth by the arrangements, the Regional Transport Commissioner should be immediately advised by letter, stating:—(1) serial number allotted by the Ministry, (2) helmets already authorized, (3) additional number required, (4) employees for whom helmets are wanted. The price will continue at 7s. each.
The programme for the new helmets contemplates an output rising to over 500,040 helmets per,week, and supplies will be available at an early date.
It will be known as "civilian helmet
(steel) " and will consist of three parts: steel body, lining, and lace for attaching the lining. The components will be supplied separately and helmets assembled after purchase. Lugs are provided for attaching a chin strap or carrying loop, and sizes will be from 6i to n.
Distribution will be undertaken by the Ministry of Home Security, but applications will be collected by other Government Departments concerned with particular categories of workers, and should, therefore, not be made direct to the former. Applications from factories on 'the special list of the Ministry of Supply will go to that Ministry, from those on aircraft production to the Ministry of Aircraft Production, and from road-transport employers (other than local authorities) to the Regional Transport Commissioner,
