THE West Riding Wool Transport Pool was formed, in the first place, to assist the Wool Control in the local transport of the large quantities of wool required to be transferred from storage warehouses to customers for processing. Secondly, it is intended as a protection for these hauliers who, previous to the Wool Control taking over all stocks of wool, had made the haulage of wool an integral, part of their business.

To become members, applicants must produce evidence that the haulage of wool was an integral part of their work for at least 12 months previous to September, 1939. Included in the company are contractors in all the principal West Riding towns. Orders received at the central office, from the Control, are forwarded to the hauliers most conveniently placed for the prompt execution of these orders.

To avoid wastage of mileage and fuel, every endeavour is made to arrange for return loads, and, as a result, it is the general experience that there is a .minimum of empty running.

Rates have been agreed with the Control for the different classes of wool, and on proved completion of an order the haulier sends his invoice to the Pool. There it is checked and passed and the Pool re-invoices to the Control. On payment by the Control tia the Pool, the haulier is reimbursed, less a discount to meet necessary expenditure. Most of the contractors have been found to be covered by goods-in-transit insurance policies for all risks, but the Pool has taken opt a cover to include all those whose insurance is not adequate; a deduction is made from those to whom this applies.

According to all accounts the organization is working smoothly and satisfactorily and has earned the confidence of the hauliers and the Wool Control, with whom relations are most cordial.

The address of the Pool is The West Riding Wool Transport Pool, Ltd., 18, Leeds Road, Bradford. The committee of seven comprises Messrs. H. Burrill, P. Blythe, R. Hanson, C. J. Fox, E. Webster, R. Barr and H. Short, and the secretary is Mr. C. Maxwell Bradford.
