The waste management company says it is pioneering an apprenticeship scheme in the central London region following its decision to take on four apprentices in 2009.

They are now receiving specialised training by a series of vehicle manufacturers and suppliers to give them a fully rounded skills base and enable them to repair and maintain Veolia’s range of waste management vehicles.

The training agency Skillnet mentors them through the programme when the apprentices are not concentrating on their Transport Engineering NVQs, which run alongside the apprenticeship.

Since the 2009 intake, the company has taken on another two apprentices and, such is its commitment and belief in the system, it is now investigating the possibility of setting up its own training establishment, Campus Veolia, which would take responsibility for its apprenticeship development programmes.

Transport manager Gary Clark says: “This is a new strategy for our central London workshops and will ensure that the apprentices get the best possible training with the business benefit being that each workshop in the region has a well-rounded skills set.”
