A MISTAKE has been acknowledged and a wrong righted by those who nominate the members of the Committee of Inquiry into licensing. The original committee contained nobody who had any road transport operating experience.

Two assessors at least have been appointed who will surely speak in the Committee for those most likely to be affected by their recommendations. Their qualifications are unquestionable.

Len Payne of Sainsburys Ltd and C. J. Palmer of Transport Development Group were obvious choices for the posts. The wonder is that they were missed from the original selection as committee members.

The operation of road transport has been the subject of much emotive debating in the recent past, and mainly, it must be said, by those least qualified to do so. The Foster Committee is now properly equipped for its task and should now be able to report on time in September.

The appointment of Messrs Payne and Palmer will surely ensure that recommendations acceptable to the industry are made to the Secretary of State.
