QPECIALLY designed for handling commercial vehicles or the heavier types of private car, a 7i-ton electric lift has been introduced by the Laycock Engineering Co., Ltd., Victoria Works, Millhouses, Sheffield. As with this maker's Coronation model, no excavation is required for installation and the lift may be moved to any desired position at any time.

Power is provided by a 4 h.p. electric motor which runs at a speed of 1,000 r.p.m., and is applied through a 5:1 reduction gear. The roller-type .chain is approximately 64 ft. long,-with a breaking load of 6,800 lb. It is adjustable at the motor.

The platforms are of rolled-steel allwelded construction, 20 ft. long and 2 ft. 6 ins. wide. With ramps, the length is increased to 22 ft. 2 ins. Overall width is 10 ft. 9 ins. The platforms have a minimum height of 7 ins, and can be raised to the maximum height of 4 ft. 9 ins. in I f minutes.

The Laycock concern has also reintroduced its 60-ton hydraulic press, the manufacture of which was discontinued at the outbreak of war. The new model embodies a number of improvements made possible as a result of the company's aircraft-engineering experience.

The hydraulic mechanism has been redesigned to give maximum capacity with a dual-pressure pump — high pressure at 60 tons and low pressure at 30 tons. The table can be adjusted by means of a hand wheel operating four screws and its overall width of 15 ins. provides ample space for most work. A table travel of 36 ins, is provided.

For long shafts there is a useful working height between the floor and the underside of the ram of 56 ins., and the width of gap between the side members to allow long shafts to be placed across the table is 6 ins.

The ram is 5 ins, in diameter and has a travel of 7 ins. At high pressure it travels at 40 strokes to the inch, and at low pressure 20 strokes. The overall dimensions of this new Laycock hydraulic press are: height, 80 ins.; length, 54 ins.; and breadth, 33 ins. It weighs 12 cwt.

There is a secondary rack and pinion press with a capacity of 3 tons and arbor travel of 9f ins. As an additional accessory, the press can be supplied with a removable table plate, which is secured by clamping screws allowing free movement of such large units as cylinder blocks.
