Unions expect Iceland pay rise decision soon

• The Transport and General Workers Union is this week pushing the frozen food retailer Iceland for a wage deal above the 3.2% already rejected by the company's 200 drivers.
The union, which is going to the meeting expecting a settlement, says it wants a deal above the rate of inflation—currently at 3.5%. Iceland says it will not comment until after the meeting
TGWU officer John Beard, who is negotiating for his 800 driver and warehouse members at Iceland's Deeside, Milton Keynes and Stratford, east London depots, says: "Three point two per cent is just not sufficient. It's not even covering inflation."
Meanwhile, the union has moved back from confrontation over the dispute between sacked Iceland driver Roy Hammond and the company.
Hammond, who was sacked in July for making regular 21mile detours to avoid a Cumbrian village with a 14% (1-in-7) slope, is to represent himself at industrial tribunal. The TGWU is to wait for the tribunal's outcome and says it will consider industrial action if the company loses and does not conform with the ruling.
