• In a surprise move, Stagecoach Holdings has taken over Southdown Motor Services. The company would not disclose the precise sum involved in the take-over, which is reported to be in the region of 28-10 million.
Former National Bus Company subsidiary Southdown is based at Lewes and operates a fleet of some 300 vehicles in East and West Sussex.
It was sold to a management team in 1987, led by its present managing director Phil Ayers.
Stagecoach already owns Hampshire Bus, United Counties, Cumberland Motor Services, Ribble and East Midland Motor Services.
