Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

spring production increase

• As part of an £850,000 expansion scheme at its Tinsley Park Works, Sheffield, the British Steel Corporation's Special Steels Division is proposing to install new capacity for increasing production of tapered leaf springs.

Taperlite is a registered trade mark of BSC for these springs which use leaves having parabolic contours on each cantilever. This produces uniform stress in bending along the cantilever length.

The springs can be used either for light vehicles or for heavy vehicles. BSC claims savings in weight of up to one-third compared with a conventional leaf spring for the same duty.

BSC has produced more than one million tapered leaf springs in the past five years and plans to double existing capacity in the near future. These plans provide a continuous flow production line consisting of heat treatment furnaces, taper roller machines and pre-stressing equipment. Production is to be concentrated at one site at Tinsley Park.
