• A new award scheme, aimed at pro moting internationally the public recognition of the design achievements of the British motor industry and stimulating improvements in motor vehicle design, is being launched jointly by the Design Council and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. The awards for the British motor vehicle industry will become part of the Design Council's annual awards scheme and it is hoped that the first motor vehicles awards will be presented by the Duke of Edinburgh in the spring of 1974.
The judges will take into account all the characteristics of submitted products or concepts, from technical innovation, safety, performance and cost, to appearance and convenience in use. The chairman of the judging panel for the first year will be Viscount Caldecote, chairman of the Design Council and chairman of The Delta Metal Co Ltd.
Submissions for these awards will be requested from vehicle manufacturers and from suppliers of components and accessories in Britain.
