THE FUTURE OF the Vauxhall Astravan is in doubt unless significant volumes can be sold in European markets, warns Opel CV executive director Chris Lacey.
The Astravan is predominantly a UK product and, speaking at the IM Hannover CV exhibition, Lacey was keen to push the product to left-hand-drive markets. "The future of the product is partially dependent on whether further European volumes can be added," he says. "A decision on the Astravan's future needs to be made by the end o the year.'
In addition, Lacey explains that the Vauxhall Combo van will be replaced by the end of next year and an announcement is imminent regarding the product strategy on this vehicle.
Last week. Opel and Renault announced the continuation of their strategic joint venture on the replacement for Vivaro and Trafic respectively. although Lacey would not be drawn on whether a similar deal will cover the Combo van. "We'll announce our plans before the end of October." he adds.
New for Hannover. Opel was showing off an e-Concept version of the Vivaro. Using electric power for city operations, combined with a 1.4-litre petrol motor to extend the range, Opel is using the Show to test market acceptance.
