Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AMEETING to review facilities for transport education and training was held at London University last week. It was convened by the Transport Studies Society of the ,University of London whose members consist of those who have completed the three-year-course, together with the lecturers.

At the meeting were representatives from the Institute of Transport, Industrial Transport Association, Institute of Traffic Administration and the National Committee for Road Transport Education who organize the RSA diploma in road transport. There were also representatives from local educational colleges, London Transport Board and British Railways Board. Chairman was Mr. T. W. H. Galley, chairman of the Tilling Association Ltd.

It is believed this was the first time such a diverse range of interests concerned with transport education have met in joint session. As a preliminary meeting much of the discussion was exploratory. But it is understood that it was decided to examine more closely several problems, particularly the organizing of training for part-time lecturers in transport studies, especially road transport. It was agreed that unfortunately much of the work now being undertaken by part-time lecturers was of a low standard and the need to raise that standard was urgent.

It was also agreed that the preliminary qualifications of the graduate examination of the Institute of Transport should be examined and also that exemption between the several existing bodies as regards their examinations should be facilitated.

The fact that such a meeting has taken place at all is notable and indirectly might be associated with the advent of the Industrial Training Board for road transport with the ultimate if not immediate co-ordination of training in road transport which the setting up of the board implies. Unfortunately for too long many of the bodies concerned with transport training have been seemingly unaware of each other's activities and this joint meeting is therefore to be especially commended.
