A SPOKESMAN for two associated bus companies who applied to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority for permission to raise their fares in Doncaster, Thorne and Goole, told the Authority that the companies' accountants had said that the margin between costs and receipts was not .sufficient properly to provide for repairs and renewals.

Decision on the application, made by Samuel Morgan, Ltd., Armthorpe, and R. Store, Ltd., was reserved.

A director of both companies, Mr. R. F. H. Wilson, said they were carrying workers 22.8 miles for Is. 6d., or 0.79d. a mile. Even with the proposed increases, the workmens' fare would be less than Id. a mile.

Two other bus companies and three local councils objected.

Red and White Services, Ltd., and the Thames Valley Traction Co., Ltd., have applied for revised fare scales, The Red and White proposals are an increase of A. in the 2d.-5d. single rates, Id. from 6d.-1s. 11d., 2d. from 2s.-3s. 7d., 3d, from 3s. 841.-5s. 2d., and 4d. from 5s. 3d.-6s.

Ordinary and workers' returns would also increase, but their calculation would remain as at present. Weekly and season ticket rates would be virtually unchanged.

Newcastle upon Tyne City Council are being asked by the transport committee to approve a new fares structure. This would provide a distance of 1.1 miles for lid., with id. increase for each succeeding half-mile up to 3.1 miles, and id. for each mile beyond that.

Under the proposals, more than 300 of the transport department's 552 fares would be unchanged, and 16 would be reduced.

MOTOR SPIRIT LOSING GROUND "yJE are now within sight of the IT time when more fuel off will be consumed in the United Kingdom than motor spirit," Mr. C. M. Vignoles, managing director of Shell-Mex and B.P., Ltd., told members of Birmingham Rotary Club on Monday. Already, fuel oils accounted for 42 per cent, of refinery output—far too high a proportion to be carried by the percentage of lighter products.

In 25 years, petroleum consumption would be 2+ times the present figure. The financing of developments would be a serious problem. The oil industry was faced with "staggering capital expenditure needs."

POLAND SELF-SUFFICIENT

THE Polish motor industry is now producing most of the types of commercial vehicle needed to meet the country's requirements. The models being made are 2+-tonners, 31-tonners, tractor units, tippers and buses. Various prototypes are being developed and a new bus is undergoing trials.
