Eliminating Inconvenience Through Floods.

A report has been received from the sub committee appointed by Carmarthenshire Main Roads Committee to consider steps that should be taken to avert a recurrence of the serious floods which have taken place. periodically in the Towy Valley. These floods have been a great inconvenience to commercialmotor traffic.

The sub-committee recommends, as an initial step, the removal of the remains of the old Carmarthen and Dryslwyn bridges, which were damaged, and the restoration of other bridges.

The county council has already reconditioned or replaced some of the bridges and restored traffic routes practically to normal since the last flood.

A. survey of the Towy Valley situation, with regard to heavy flooding, is being undertaken at the request of the Minister of Transport.

Passenger Transport Results at Birken head.

The net profit on Birkenhead's motorbus system for the year ended March 31st, 1932, is 127,814, compared with £31,000 in the previous year. The reduction is not due to a fall in gross profit, the figure being £70,108, as against £06,898 last year, but results from setting a larger sum (142,294, contrasted with 135,897) against interest, sinking fund and income tax. The mileage run has increased from 3,217,203 to

2,683,866, and the total income has correspondingly risen from £196,888 to 1216,395, operating expenses rising from £129,990 to £146,287. The motorbus reserve fund now stands at 117,571.

The total income on the tramways, however, has suffered a heavy decline from 178,620 to £66,742, the mileage run falling from 1,177,314 to 1,073,222. The gross surplus is reduced from 110,099 to £8,922, but as the allocation to interest and sinking fund has been reduced from £8.985 to 16,273, the net profit shows a rise of £1,114 to 12,649. The decline in income is partly due to closing the New Ferry. tram route.

The present motorbus fleet totals 121 vehicles of Leyland and Daimler makes, and includes single-deckers and double-deckers.
