Foreign truck driver held after M6 crash

A PORTUGUESE lorry driver is being held in custody following a crash on the M6 that resulted in multiple deaths and the road being closed for almost nine hours.

At 11.40pm on 20 October, three HGVs were involved in a crash with two cars, resulting in one car catching fire and five people dying on the M6 in Cheshire.

Cheshire Police says a 46-year-old Portuguese driver, who was working for a Spanish firm, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving at the scene between Junction 16 and 17. The northbound section of the M6 between Junction 16 at Stoke-on-Trent and 17 for Sandbach remained closed until approximately 7.20am on Tuesday 21 October.

As CM closed for press, six fatalities had been confirmed, including three children, The Portuguese truck driver was also awaiting an interpreter before being interviewed by police. The Highways Agency says no one else suffered serious injuries.

The accident happened in heavy, slow traffic, which was caused by an earlier incident on the M6.
