Sir Richard Branson is a bit like Marmite — people tend to love him or hate him. But he gets Matthews' vote as the perfect candidate to run transport.
"He is prepared to commit himself to something whole-heartedly and support people when they are making tough decisions," says Matthews. "There are very few people left like him who are so singleminded in their approach.
"These are people who can see the big issues and do not worry so much about the details. Branson could bring together a cohesive plan without politics and we need a transport plan that does not hinge on politics because it takes 20, 30 or even 40 years to build a proper system."
