The new engines will be launched in the US, powering a new range of trucks from Merc's sister company, Freightliner. They will then to power the replacement for the Actros when it is launched at the end of the decade.

DaimlerChryster. owners of both the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner brand names, has a strategy termed "turning scale into profit". The arrival of a common engine platform for both sides of the Atlantic is the first signal of this strategy becoming reality.

It revolves around DaimlerChrysler using its position as global market leader to drive through economies of scale savings: "This is not about developing a global uniform truck," says DaimlerChrylser CV boss Eckhard Cordes. "We are looking for as much uniformity as permissible, with as much differentiation as possible."
