Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MORE THAN 800 would-be truck drivers are to receive free training in a bid to help the driver shortage by attracting applicants off the dole queue.

The national Driving to Success scheme is being launched after the success of a regional version which has been run by Banbury-based Nortec training.

That scheme, which Nortec runs in partnership with Skills for Logistics, has so far helped more than 600 applicants in the Midlands and South-East to gain C and C+E licences.

The programme's latest stage, with funding for 825 places nationwide, runs until next April. It is designed to attract the unemployed or those threatened with redundancy helped by funds from the European Social Fund.

• TRL has appointed 1 Coates (HGV Services) to help conduct a research programme into the effectiveness of truck simulators for training HGV drivers.
