Stand 220 Mercedes-Benz

WITH THE Mercedes-Benz 1633S tractive unit ABS is introduced to Britain.

This Mercedes/WABCO antilock braking system is claimed to be the most sophisticated on the market. It controls each wheel independently, providing optimum braking efficiency irrespective of road and load condition.

The 1633S is Mercedes-Benz's top of the range model in Britain. It is plated for 40 tonnes gcw. The turbocharged, vee . eight 14.62 litre, 0M422A engine has a maximum net power rating of 245kW (328bhp).

An engine speed governor limits engine revs to 1,900 in all gears except top. In the intermediate gears a kick-down device allows full power to be used when required, A ZF Ecosplit 165-130 allsynchromesh gear box provides a total of 16 speeds by means of a range change and underdrive splitter.

The rear steer 2028 six-wheel tractive unit allows for operation at proposed increased weights using existing trailer configurations.

For operation at 32-ton but plated for 34 tonnes, the 1621S replaces the 1619S and has more power available from a larger capacity 10.96-litre V6 engine developing 150kW (201bhp) at 2,300rpm while torque output is increased by about 10 per

cent. continued overleaf

Stand 537 Ford

THE DEUTZ-powered Cargo 3220 is Ford's new contender in the 32 ton gcw tractive unit market. For the show vehicle a roofmounted air deflector complements the under-bumper dam. The Cargo tractive unit is equipped as standard with the same ZF S6-80/GV 80 12-speed transmission as shown on the 2420 rigid but there is an option of the Fuller nine-speed gearbox.

Twin fuel tanks provide a capacity of 460 litres (101gal). Pantograph windshield wipers are optional. Other equipment includes driver's suspension seat, heavy duty battery and cab-front air connector.

The latest additions to the Cargo range are equipped with the Perkins V8 640 diesel engine, which develops 152 kW (204bhp). This tractive unit model is similar to the Deutzpowered one but has a floor 100mm (4in) higher.

Transcontinental models are now built in Britain by Sandbach Engineering and are available plated for operation from 34 to 44-tonnes gross. All models are powered by variants of the Cummins 14-litre turbocharged engine, which develops between 182kW and 262kW (244bhp and 352bhp).

On the stand, a 44-tonne capacity H-Series tractive unit has a 212kW (284bhp) engine driving through the optional Fuller RTO 9513 13-speed gearbox to the standard Rockwell R180 rear axle. Standard equipment includes front brake connector, cigar lighter, radio, roof marker lamps, engine idle control and remote under-cab start facility. The single fuel tank has a capacity of 460 litres.

Stand 538 Sandbach EngineeringCo

IN KEEPING with the aims of Sandbach Engineering's redevelopment programme, the company has introduced improvements to make the S10 range lighter, more durable and easier to service.

A cleaner appearance stems from the re-styled S10 composite cabs, with a front grille which maximises the throughflow of air and provides a much better surface for sign writing. The new rectangular headlamps are not just a styling feature, they are claimed to improve night vision.

Bonnet and bunk levels have been lowered to provide a more spacious interior and the 508mm (20in) diameter steering wheel is now adjustable for rake.

The most significant development has been in the construction of the frame. High tensile steel side members, extruded aluminium cross members and forged aluminium gus sets are assembled using zincplated steel bolts.

The obvious effect of this American influence on the way Fodens are built is to reduce their weight considerably.

A re-designed steering linkage has had its ZF steering box mounting changed to give improved manoeuvrability. Aluminium spigot-mounted wheels and low profile tyres are now offered.

The new lighter propshatts are made without flanges. The S104, 4x2, 38-tonne tractive unit is shownwith a Cummins LT10, 10-litre six cylinder engine rated at 186kW (250bhp) at 2,100rpm and torque of 1,017Nm (750Ibft) at 1,300rpm.

This drives through a new generation Fuller Multi-mesh nine-speed overdrive gearbox to a Kirkstall Forge D66-8-1 rear axle.

The overall design incorporates numerous weight-saving features.

Earlier this year, a much heavier 6x4 tractive unit for heavy haulage work plated at 57 tonnes gross train weight won a E4m order from Saudi Arabia. Power of 250kW (335bhp) at 1,900rpm is developed by the Cummins NTE 350 turbocharged engine. Maximum torque of 1,491Nm (1,100Ibft) occurs at 1,30Orpm.

Built to an export specification, this model has many extras, including air conditioning, twin bumpers, sump guard, lamp stone guards, tool box, upper bunk, roof air horns, tinted screen and sun visor.

As with other models on the stand, sheet moulded corn pound panels are bolted over a steel cage to form the rust-free cab construction.

Stand 542 Dodge

THE Dodge G20 tractive unit exhibited has been fitted with fifthwheel coupling, trailer connections and wheel arches, ready for the road by Karrier's SE0 department. The model's Perkins 112kW (150bhp) engine drives through a Dodge five-speed box on to an Eaton two-speed axle. With a wheelbase of 2.54m (8ft 41n) the G20 is designed for operation at 20 tonnes goo When the Renault R310 4x2 tractive unit becomes available in 1983, it will replace the R305 as the company's flagship. It employs the same Renault cab shell but the interior has been redesigned. The engine is a second generation Renault 12-litre unit developing 229kW (307bhp) and a torque of 1,284Nm (947Ibft). The drive line incorporates a nine-speed gearbox and 13tonne rear axle.

A lightweight tractive unit, the 6260, will also be introduced in the middle of next year. Power is provided by the new MIDR 06 20 45 engine, which is both turbocharged and chargecooled, developing 192kW (260bhp) at 2,200rprn and torque of 1,039 Nn (7661bft) at 1,400rpm. There will be a choice of a day or sleeper version of the "Club of Four" cab. The G260 will be equipped with the new Renault B9 nine-speed synchromesh gearbox.

Intended specifically for the UK market for operation at 32tons, the TF 231 4x2 tractive unit appears with a day cab and a claimed ready for the road weight, with 400 litres (88ga1) of fuel, of 5.5 tonnes.

Its 8.82-litre six-cylinder engine rated at 161kW (216bhp) net installed is matched to an 11speed synchromesh gearbox and 13-tonne double reduction rear axle. The Renault involvement with Mack Trucks is evident in a late entry to the stand. The 5170 4x2 tractive unit is a left-hand drive version of right-hand drive models which will be imported from France next year. The 126kW (170bhp) engine makes this model suitable for operation at 24 tons gcw.

Stand 544 Seddon Atkinson

SEDDON ATKINSON's new lightweight tractive unit, the 301, is certain to attract a lot of attention to stand 544 at Birmingham. The Oldham-based manufacturer says the vehicle was effectively designed around Cummins' new 10-litre engine, the L10.

Rated at 180kW (241bhp) in the Seddon Atkinson, the new Cummins engine drives through a Lipe-Rollway 356mm (14in) diameter twin plate clutch which has ceramic linings as standard, and then through a 10-speed Spicer SST 8010 splitter gearbox with direct top ratio to the RA-57 single reduction rear axle. Standard differential ratio is 3.91:1.

A kerb weight of 5.31 tonnes (5 tons 5cwt) including 5 gallons of fuel, oil and water is claimed for the 301 and Seddon Atkinson unashamedly asserts that it is aimed head-on at those operators who currently buy Volvo F7s, Scania 82s and DAF 2500s.

The 301's basic cab shell is the same as used on the 401 but is mounted 178mm (7in) lower on the frame.

THE LATEST addition to Seddon Atkinson's range of 401 tractive units is the turbocharged Gardner in-line eight powered model.

Like all six other 401 models, the basic specification includes air-assisted, hydraulically operated and self-adjusting Dana Spicer twir-plate clutch, a Fuller nine-speed overdrive range gearbox, and an RA 57 hypoid bevel single reduction rear axle.

The 8LXCT develops 214kW (287bhp) at 1,900rpm and a torque of 1,172NM (865Ibft) at 1,40Orpm.

With five gallons of fuel, oil and water the 8LXCT 401 has a kerb weight of 5,824kg.
