Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

But weight saving design is a feature many engine, transmission and chass components. Bill Brock points out oth( too, as he takes you round the rug gel rigids

SIX AND EIGHT-wheelers for operation at 24 and 30 tons are the traditional vehicles employed for on/off road tipper operation. Their construction has to be strong enough to withstand the demanding working environment but manufacturers, ever conscious of payload, strive to use materials and components which reduce unladen weight and extend servicing intervals.

General cab specifications often match the standards set by premium-weight tractive units but trim details differ according to the type of operation.

Stand 517/518 Volvo

THE best selling of Volvos range of rigids to be built at Irvine in Scotland is the F7 8x4.

With this vehicle, Volvo claims to be market leader in the fouraxle rigid sector.

General specification includes the Volvo TD 70F 162 kW (217bhp) engine as fitted to the F7 4x2 tractive unit while the Volvo SR62 16-speed gearbox enables engine revs to be confined to a very narrow economical band, even if it does require a great deal of gear changing.

The all-steel Club of Four cab is well equipped and offers familiar Volvo comfort.

Stand 532 DAF

DAF is exhibiting its new FAD 2525 DHS 8x4 rigid plated for 30,49 tonnes. Everyone ex pected it to be at Tipcon earlier in the year, but instead it makes its first appearance here.

Its DHS turbocharged and charge-cooled 8.25-litre DAF engine develops a healthy 182kW (244bhp) at 2,400rpm and 906Nrn (668Ibft) of torque at 1,60Orpm.

A nine-speed ZF 5S-92 synchromesh range-change gearbox transmits the drive to DAF 2699 hub reduction axles coupled as a double-drive tandem set. The bogie, employing two spring suspension within an eight torque rod design, is located through the chassis, saving on the weight of a heavy subframe.

DAF's FAS 2100 DHT is a 6x2 rigid which can be operated as a powerful solo vehicle or as a drawbar outfit The DHT turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine develops 160kW (215bhp) at 2,400rpm and 752Nm (555Ibft) of torque.

Its ZF transmission gives a set of 12 close ratio gears driving through to a single-drive axle. The chassis on show features the DAF lifting rear axle which is offered as standard.

A top-sleeper cab allows for maximum platform length for drawbar operation within the 18m (59ft) legal maximum length. The cab's trim package has been revised and the vehicle is now protected by a five-year anti-corrosion warranty.

Stand 533 Scania

SCANIA's first eight-wheeler chassis makes its debut on stand 533 at this year's show. The P82M 8x4 RSi will be available in 5.0m (16ft 51n) and 5.9m (19ft 41n) wheelbase versions (measured from the first front-axle centre to the first rea centre).
