Brief Details of the Working of Petrol Buses and Trolley Vehicles During the Past Municipal Year.

IN the year ended March 31st last, the operation of the petrol bases of the Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation resulted in a net profit of £1,886, whilst the surplus of the trolley-buses was £1,267, whereas a deficiency of 1201 was recorded on the tramcars, The result of

the year's working showed a net surplus after the payment of sinking fund and loan charges, but before providing for renewals, of £352.

The total revenue from all sources amounted to £83,431, that froth the tramcars and trolley-buses being very little difference from the previous year, whilst that from the petrol buses in creased by about £5,500. The total working expenses amounted to £57,060, so that a gross profit of £20,371 was recorded.

During the year under review the corporation's petrol bus fleet was increased from eight to twelve, three of the newvehicles being Karriers, with Short Bros. patent all-metal bodies, and the other a Guy.

The net profit on the buses is considered to be very satisfactory, and it is 'expected that the current yGar.S operations will prove equally successful. During the past year express bus services were inaugurated between Staly

bridge and Eccles, via Ashton, and between A_shton. and Ilrmston, via Manchester.

In the period under review the trolleybuses proved most reliable and gave the minimum of trouble. The receipts were slightly higher than for the previous year, Although the vehicles were operated over an increased mileage, a decrease of .61d. per mile was shown in

the average total receipts. Working expenses, however, showed a reduction of .50d. per mile, -Which supports the assertion of Mr. C. Irwin Baker, the general manager, that such vehicles can be cheaply maintained. The trolley-bus service is maintained by eight Railless 37-seaters.
