A firm of builders whose maintenance arrangements were described as "pretty chaotic" has lost the use of one of its two vehicles for two weeks.

John and Ruth Gizzi, trading as J&T Gizzi Builders, of Abergele, face a further maintenance investigation within six months. Welsh Traffic Commissioner David Dixon has warned that if this is unsatisfactory their licence could be at risk. When the vehicle was produced for clearance a variation notice was issued for a further four immediate items.

The partners were fined £200 for using a dangerous vehicle and £150 for having no excise licence.

Vehicle examiner John F Brown said: "Inspection intervals vary between five and 12 months judging by the records. In short there appears to be no preventative maintenance system in operation."

John GUI said that both vehicles had passed their annual test and did little mileage. As far as the prohibited vehicle was concerned, Gizzi said the brake warning light had come on the previous day and he was on the way to a nearby garage to have the brakes sorted out. Brown pointed out that the loaded vehicle had been pointing in the opposite direction.

Gizzi said maintenance was now being contracted out to a commercial garage with inspections every eight weeks. Daily checks would be carried out by an employee who held a CPC.

Curtailing the licence, the TC concluded: "I have to say that the picture painted by Mr Brown is a pretty chaotic one of the arrangements as they were."
