WITII reference to your correspondent D. P. Isherwood (CM, November 9) am delighted to respond to the question raised on the subject of British content.

Foden's policy is to source all materials, where available, within the UK; the second favoured source of supply is within the ECC, and only as a third choice are materials brought in from other countries.

There are, however, certain components which are not available within the UK and one which I would instance would be the frame rails. The backbone of the Foden range is an incredibly tough, lightweight chassis system consisting of high tensile steel frame rails of 108,813 lb/in2 ultimate strength and unfortunately we are unable to obtain them within the UK. The steel used is almost twice as strong is that used in most European trucks but we tel that its use is justified in order CO provide the operator with the combination of strength and light weight when used with the high performance alloys of crossmembers and gussets.

Payload means profit and that is why we are always searching for new materials in an effort to maintain our lightweight advantages and we make no apologies if these have to be sourced front outside the UK.

Mr Isherwood will probably be most surprised to learn that the UK content of the particular S104 is 85.8 per cent and that other models can achieve over 90 per cent.
