Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE TWIN Splitter shown by Eaton Truck Components is a 12-speed gearbox, with a four-position H pattern gear lever, phis three splitter gears which are operated by a simple switch. Each splitter gear is pre-selected, without moving the main lever or using the clutch.

Once a speed of about 43km/h (27mph) has been reached, all further gear changing can he accomplished by using the splitter switch. The result is reduced driver effort and fatigue.

The Senn-Automated Mechanical Transmission (SAMT) also shown is a development of the Twin Splitter principle. but incorporates an electropneumatic mechanism for gear shift, together with simple clutch and electronic throttle controls. All are activated by a microprocessor.

The driver uses a small lever to signal a gear change. pushing it forward for an upwards change, or back for a down change. Full control of the clutch and throttle is carried out by the electronic system.

The only manual operation of the clutch by the driver occurs during starting and stopping. A green indicator on the dashboard enables the driver to change gear with the optimum efficiency to achieve the best fuel economy.

Eaton is also showing its Automated Mechanical Transmission concept (AMT) which provides a fully automated control for heavy-duty trucks. The company believes that it has overcome die major known problem of the concept, namely the durability of standard dry plate clutches. AMT is claimed to provide the driver with an easy gear change while lowering lifecycle costs and protecting vehicle drivelines.

Eaton's DS 401 l tandem drive axle on display is capable of handling axle loads of up to 25 tonnes. It is available in single, two-speed and planetary double reductions and offers a wide range of ratios for on and off-road applications.

Also on show are two of the Eaton New Family synchromesh transmissions, offering live or six speeds for medium-weight trucks. With their aluminium split casing design. the units offer lighter weight and easier servicing.

A complete programme of nine series of low-weight 13.44 heavy-duty hypoid axles is now available for trucks with gross weights from eight to 44 tonnes. They offer a wide choice of speed ratios for long-distance as well as general heavy-duty haulage.
