Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by lain Sherriff

• Did you ever crib from the boy in front at school and as a result lose the class .prize? Perhaps at first you had believed you knew how to tackle the problem, but as he was doing it differently, you copied him and as a result you were both wrong.

I saw something like this happen at the LDOY competition in Dundee last week. One of the early competitors in Class A tackled all three tests wrongly, collecting an exceptionally high score, and those who followed perpetuated his mistakes.

The officials could be faulted for allowing the competitors to bunch at the start of test day but if the drivers had studied the regulations properly and gained confidence in themselves the mistakes would never have happened. The bunching error was soon rectified and from Class B onwards the event went like clockwork.

This was Dundee's first ever LDOY competition and it produced a worthy champion in Mr. FL Macdonald of Shell-Mex and BP (Scotland) Ltd. who had only 82 penalties. Mr. W. Candy of National Carriers Ltd. who qualified for the 1968 final via Aberdeen will be back at the final this year; he won Class Fl and also led his NCL team to victory.

Dundee is built on a hill rising steeply from the River Tay and last Sunday's road route took the drivers over a tortuous and almost mountainous course. The test included one bend which was almost akin to a hairpin. With police observers at check points along the course drivers had to call at all the stops to return with a clean sheet.

In the circumstances the road route scores were surprisingly low---not so with the Highway Code test: whereas some competitors returned a clean sheet a vast number failed miserably.

Mr. Gordon Melville, the Dundee secretary, told me that they are now deciding where to display the trophies which they intend to bring back from this year's final. How is that for enthusiasm and confidence?
