Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• After winning his class in a brewer's van, 19-year-old J. L. Devine, (John Smith Brewers Ltd.) proved -that he could handle larger vehicles by winning the class winners' drive-off. This finale was run over the loading bay test only and despite knocking over a pylon Devine got so close to both barriers that he was still able to win.

The lowest score of the day was recorded by regular campaigner Geoff Baker an owner

driver whose 37 points in Class D can only be matched in splendour by his red beard and flamboyant personality. Geoff told me that he had been competing for 11 years—the first five for practice—and had been in the final in 1965 and 1967.

Class B was won by J. Hall, another ownerdriver in a Ford; last year he won Class C in

the same vehicle. The switch of classes could have been caused by the fact that the official

rule was measuring 12(in. to the foot until someone discovered this—and by then Hall was well on his way to winning Class B. Third, second and then first—this was the sequence set up by D. Warner (Joseph Cherry and Sons Ltd.) in winning Class C.

Perhaps the longest vehicle ever to be seen at the York contest, a 50ft 7÷in. Bedford low-loader was manfully handled by Corporal Clayson, (RAF Leconsfield), He did extremely well in the kerb parking test despite touching

the kerb. The loading bay test proved virtually impossible as the area allowed just was not large enough for the RAF's low-loader which is generally used for recovering damaged aircraft.

The organization of the round was not without fault; for one thing it did not end until

5.45 pm. The officials were also unable to announce the name of the best artic driver due to the results of Class E2 going adrift Also in Class El F. W. Dyson lTadcaster RDCI was presented with the cup which was actually won by R. H. Jones (Mechplant Ltd.). All the same, congratulations to both officials and the 99 competitors on a great day.
