THERE will inevitably be a good I deal of last-minute business during the coming week in the delivery of urgent orders from manufacturers of wearing apparel of all descriptions. Hauliers who are in touch or within reach of manufacturers or wholesalers should therefore take steps to ensure that they can be quickly advised of any traffic that may be going. This is the time of the year when the building trade begins to develop. The busiest districts appear to be those parts of Yorkshire where steel making and engineering are the principal industries, Sheffield's output of steel is now breaking all records.

Lancashire and Oieshire. • . In Lancashire, many engineering concerns are becoming more active as the result of Russian orders.

Manchester. T.C. is to build 452 houses at Brownley Green. Huyton

with-Roby has passed plans for 235 houses to be erected on various estates, and has received plans for the lay-out of Mosscroft, Pluckington and Ward's Farm, providing for 1,700 houses and 80 shops.

Midlands.

In the Midlands the most active trades appear to be those amongst the engineering concerns which cater principally for the motor and building trades. Manufacturers of steel strip are working under pressure.

Around Leicester and Nottingham those few concerns which specialize in children's clothing appear to be busiest. Makers of stockings are active and the Nottingham lace trade, although not too good, i5 improving.

Yorkshire.

Trade generally in and around Sheffield is good. Cutlery manufacturers are taking orders for cheap goods as a preliminary to anticipated increases in prices. At Brown Bayley's.steel works new furnaces are being installed for the manufacture of stainless Steel.

Sheffield T.C. has approved the building of 500 houses. Sowerby Bridge U.D.C. is to develop the Beechsvcod Estate, providing for 480 houses. Three thousand houses are to be demolished in the Marsh Lane area, Leeds.

Scotland.

Business along the Clyde and in Glasgow is better than it has been for a long time. Makers of the smaller type of craft are active and there is a good rlal of short-haul work between the various engine builders, etc., and the shipyards.

It is proposed to build a bridge over the Eden at Guardbridge, to cost about £70,000. Airdrie T.C. is to erect baths at an estimated cost of £12,000. .

The extension of Fife hospital, at an estimated cost of £100,000, is proposed, whilst Fifeshire C.C. is to extend the poorhouse accommodation at a cost of £25,000, and is to build a new high school at Dunfermline, to cost £85,000.

A. and J. Inglis, Ltd-, Glasgow, is to build a tug for the Clyde Shipping Co., Glasgow. Aitchison, 131a.ir, Ltd., Clydebank, has received orders for two sets of marine steam reciprocating engines.

Alloa T.C. is to build 38 houses and Stornoway T.C. is to erect 20 threeapartment houses. Edinburgh Corporation has had plans passed for 324 houses at Restalrig and 258 at Crouton Mains, and 26 bungalows are to be built at Greenbank Road, Edinburgh.

Kincardine C.C. is to spend 23,000 on school alterations at Inverbervie. Roxburgh E.C. is to erect new school buildings at Hobkirk, to cost £4,900, and to carry out alterations and extensions at Newcastleton Public School, at a cost of £3,000.

North-Uast Coast.

The general state of the coat trade in Northumberland and Durham remains good, There is, however, the usual seasonal falling off in traffic of coal for retail to householders.

Ship repairing is active on the Tyne. One concern, Smith's Dock Co., has work for 30 weeks in that department, besides orders for new tonnage.

A public hall and museum is to be erected on the Borough Hall site, Stockton, and the Globe Theatre is to be extended. South Shields T.C. proposes to build 230 houses and shops at Quarry Lane, Cleadon.

East Anglia.

Norwich manufacturers of boots and shoes are fairly active. Wales.

Increased activity in connection with the Admiralty floating mining depot on Milford Haven, and the seaplane base at Pembroke Dock, is involving new road construction on which about £30,000 is to be spent this year.

The Mond nickel refinery at Clydach, Swansea, is increasing its activities. Swansea is considering a five.year plan which includes the demolition of 936 houses_ Wrexham T.C. is to build 160 houses and is applying for permission to erect a further 100.

West Country.

The timber docks at Bristol and Avonmouth are becoming more active. The leather trade is steady.

Bristol T.C. is considering a scheme for municipal offices to cost £374,740.

London and Home Counties.

There is a little' more activity than usual in the docks this week, as reference to a special paragraph will confirm. Deliveries of timber are increasing each week and the leather trade at Bermondsey is " set fair." Hat manufacturers at Luton are busy.

Essex C.C. is to spend 210,000 on bridges. Eastbourne T.C. is applying for sanction to borrow £34,000 for a bandstand and shelter at Grand Parade.

Messrs. A. J. and, A. Taylor propose building 4,000 houses on the Deane Estate, South Ruislip.

London Docks.
