The driver's employers have threatened legal action for slander if the Minister, Martin Bangemann, does not apologise.

Bangemann was driving his official Mercedes at 96 km/h near Koblenz when a lorry swung into the fast lane ahead of him. He slammed on his brakes and swerved partly onto the central reservation to avoid a collision.

The driver of a following car with security men was not so lucky and struck the lorry's trailer a glancing blow, causing £5,000 worth of damage.

Lorry driver Karl-Heinz Mueller did not stop, claiming he did not feel the impact or see the Minister's car in his mirror, The row erupted after Bangemann chased after the lorry and forced the driver to halt. "Lorries have no business in the overtaking lane!" yelled the irate minister, "You're all murderers!"
