SIGNS OR the lack of them have been making news. New experimental signs showing the frequencies of local radio stations broadcasting traffic information have been installed on parts of M2. M20 and M4. The hope is that they will enable drivers to avoid trouble spots, which is a splendid idea so long as users' attention is not distracted from the road in fiddling with the radio.
Signs that are causing danger are those that have become obscured by grass and foliage which highway authorities have not bothered to cut. Drivers who are obliged to slow down on a fast road to try to read an almost invisible direction are a danger to themselves and everyone else.
The removal by contractors of a three-ton limit warning from the entrance to a multi-storey car park at Abertillery in South Wales had a salutary result. A large lorry delivering sand fell through the top floor and became jammed, nose upwards, between the second and first. The owner-driver was unhurt but his livelihood went through the hole with his wrecked lorry.
