Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WITH a Leyland Beaver chassis as W its basis a new 1,200-gallon singlecompartment tar-spraying tanker has recently been produced by Thompson Bros. (Bilston), Ltd., Bradley Engineering Works, Bilston. The tank is of elliptical design, and is 14 ft. (3 ins. long over the insulation, being built in single-compartment form for efficiency. The ends are die-pressed, dished and flanged, and welded into the barrel plate. Full access to the whole of the tank is made possible by the fitting internally of two transverse baffles.

Much thought has been given to the design of the manhole, to overcome filling difficulties. It is of pressed steel and has a lid specially designed for tar, being fitted internally with filter baskets and externally with vent cocks and filling connections. The whole of the lid is totally enclosed by a hinged and padlocked pressed-aluminium dome. A stainless steel tray, running around the manhole cover, collects any overflow, which is drained at once to the underside of the tank.

Inside the tank are a 21-in. rotary pump and its suction and delivery pipe lines to the sprayer in the rear of the tank. The drive for the pump, by chain and sprockets, is carried

through the front end and coupled up in conventional manner to the powertake-off.

The tank is insulated externally with 2-in, aluminium foil and is covered with light-gauge aluminium sheeting. It is panelled along each side and at the rear, and fitted with hinged doors to give easy access to the service tank, the power drive and the various valves in the pipe lines.

At the rear is the patent tar sprayer —covered with light-gauge aluminium sheeting—with 18 nozzles, suitable for spraying roads 7 ft. t.; ins. wide. At this point also is the operator's plat

form, with all connections from main delivery lines.

The pump, pipe lines and spr are subjected to a pressure of 5( per sq. in., although the normal I sure with the sprayer is not more 30 lb. per sq. in.

The hose is accommodated in tainers fitted along the sides, bet' the tank and its panelling. The ma special all-steel mounting and ru blocks are used for fitting the tart the chassis.
