Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Irish Ferries is cutting its services between Ireland and France by 40% this summer because of a drop in traffic last year.

The company, which has already cancelled its winter services to France, is selling its oldest ship, Sr Patrick, leaving only one ferry, St Killian, on the Cherbourg, Le Havre and Roscoff routes when they resume in the summer.

Instead of daily services from Rosslare and Cork between March and September they will now operate every second day reducing freight capacity by more than 40%. The company says the cut is mainly due to a 10% drop in passenger levels last year.

Irish Ferries is to replace both vessels by 1998 as the St Killian is also approaching the end of its life under new European regulations.
